The Vibrant Vyrnwy Project

The Vibrant Vyrnwy project recently bought a Polycrub from us. We had a chat with their Volunteer Development Officer, Kirsty, and here’s what she had to say.

“The Polycrub is set up at the Lake Vyrnwy Tree Nursery which was funded by Local Places for Nature Challenge Fund (Powys County Council). The work has been facilitated by the Vibrant Vyrnwy project which is Lotto community funded, and a collaboration between RSPB, the local council and Hafren Dyfrdwy (the water company that own the site).

The project was set up to provide native trees for a treescape plan at Lake Vyrnwy, which will enhance habitat through the ffridd and scatter out to the peatlands right at the top, as well as facilitate engagement, upskilling, and wellbeing opportunities using the Tree Nursery as a hub.

Our beneficiaries are varied – pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools, conservation volunteers, women-only groups, to name but a few. They have planted seeds, laid the hedge, repaired the dry-stone wall, and come along to lots of training days and workshops. The local community have also attended events, along with young people, agricultural trainees, and RSPB interns.

Our tree nursery funding has now ended, and we are seeking funding to continue this work as the Vibrant Vyrnwy project is also due to end in September. We are keeping everything crossed that we can secure enough funding to continue.

Our Polycrub has gone down a huge hit with our staff and volunteers, and the little welcome kit is so cute! Jon Loveday, who built the Polycrub for us, did a fantastic job. It was a pleasure getting to know him, and the level of care and attention to detail he took during the construction is evident. It is a huge asset and such an amazing structure, which I am delighted is part of our site.”
