  • New ‘therapeutic’ Polycrub is at the heart of Hillswick
Patients, staff and supporters celebrated the official opening of the Hillswick Health Centre’s therapeutic Polycrub, in the North Mainland of Shetland. This is the first Polycrub to be linked to a health centre.

This therapeutic Polycrub has individual plots for local folk to grow their own vegetables, herbs and other plants, and it is currently fully subscribed and blooming luxuriantly.

“We’re absolutely thrilled at the way people have become so enthusiastic about it,” said GP Dr Susan Bowie. “It’s really been taken to the heart of the community. I became very aware of the therapeutic benefits of gardening when I was undergoing treatment in Glasgow’s Beatson Centre a few years ago, and it was time spent at the Botanic Gardens there that gave me the idea for a surgery Polycrub here.”

"And it offers folk the chance to grow their own healthy food, free of additives and saving money!"

The Hillswick Health Centre has for several years enjoyed an area of wild woodland and a garden seating area featuring a sculpture by local blacksmith Bruce Wilcock.

The project was funded by NHS Shetland’s Endowment Fund, with some extra local fundraising to cover the supply of gravel, plants, site preparation and tools. Pam Muir, who is married to Dr Andy Muir, Dr Bowie’s Associate GP, was heavily involved in planning and along with other volunteers, in preparation and planting.

“Without Pam and Andy, and all the surgery staff, this would never have happened,” said Dr Bowie. “They’ve done a fantastic job.” She also thanked the St Magnus Bay Hotel and the Health Centre staff for supplying food and drink for the opening celebration, and Transition Turrifield for supplying a full, month-by-month planting schedule.

“I think more health centres should think about having a Polycrub,” said Dr Bowie. “It’s of great benefit to patients and staff, and is a genuine community resource.”
